Axilla Lymph Nodes
A normal lymph node's cortex is less than 3mm. Normal lymph node appearance: Oval or reniform, smooth margins, uniform peripheral cortex, minimal thickness of cortex 3mm or less.
Abnormal lymph nodes are ≥ 3mm, but can be considered within normal limits if seen in both axilla’s symmetrically. To learn the different appearances of abnormal lymph nodes, sign up with our Mastery Academy below!
Typical Protocol: If all lymph nodes are oval with a fatty hilum, image with and without color. If the cortex thickened at 3mm or greater, (this measurement may vary based on your radiologist’s preference), measure ONLY the cortex. Show contralateral axilla for symmetry.
Abnormal appearance: measure in three planes and show with and without color.
